'Ghost in the Shell' 4K Remastered: When and Where to Watch the Screenings in the U.S.

Mamoru Oshii's 1995 sci-fi film Ghost in the Shell is an anime classic, and it is often heralded as one of the best in the genre.

The film has now been remastered in 4K, and the new version will be screened in IMAX in theaters across the U.S.

Anime fans will be given the chance to enjoy the film on the big screen at the same time as Japan, because it is being released simultaneously in both countries.

Anime News Network reported that Bandai Namco Arts shared an announcement on Friday about Ghost in the Shell, revealing it would be released in IMAX on September 17.

The company said in their announcement that the film would be released in 35 IMAX theaters in Japan, before the 4K remastered edition of the film is screened in regular cinemas from October 1.

Details for which theaters the film will be released in across the U.S. will be revealed at a later date.

The film features 4K remastered images that have been adjusted in multiple ways, including sound and brightness, through IMAX's image processing technology.

As such, the 35mm film has been given a 4K resolution that brings details to the forefront that wouldn't have been visible in its original format.

According to a report from Crunchyroll, director Oshii said of the screening: "Fortunately, this film has been reborn in a new form with each technological advancement.

"I'm glad that you can see it in the theater now in this day and age. Please enjoy!"

Ghost in the Shell is based on Masamune Shirow's manga of the same name, and it focuses on cyber agent Major Motoko Kusanagi and the Internal Bureau of Investigations search for The Puppet Master.

The villainous character is a computer virus that is able to infiltrate cybernetic brains and alter the memories of its victims.

Ghost in the Shell was produced by Production I.G, and the company has also worked on all the other films and shows in the franchise.

The sci-fi classic has spawned a number of sequels, including Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

The film was released in Ultra-High Definition (UHD) 4K Blu-ray Disc and Digital 4K Ultra HD in the U.S. by Lionsgate in September 2020, but this will be the first time the remastered version has been screened in theaters.

There are 76 IMAX theaters in the U.S. and it has yet to be announced which ones will screen the film from September 17, 2021.
