Girl, 14, Arrested on Suspicion of Murder After Man Stabbed to Death

A 14-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found stabbed to death in the street.

Police said the child remains in custody along with a man, 21, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both were arrested in London following the stabbing in Crawley, Sussex, in south-east England. Armed police were called to the scene on Tuesday night where the victim, 24, was discovered. He was seriously injured and treated by paramedics and an air ambulance doctor before being pronounced dead.

The two arrests were made over 24 hours later after police in Sussex launched a manhunt as officers attempted to track down a suspect.

Forensics teams were seen working at the scene of the stabbing which was cordoned off as investigations began. A video posted to social media highlighted the scale of the investigation, with a number of emergency service vehicles and police sirens captured, while residents said the town had been "shaken" by the murder.

Flowers and personal messages have been left on the street where the killing took place. A note on one read: "RIP. Gone but never forgotten. May you rest up in perfect peace," local media reports.

In a statement, police said: "Police investigating the murder of a man in Three Bridges, Crawley, on Tuesday evening (October 27) have arrested a teenage girl.

"Emergency services were called to Russell Way at 9 pm where they found the 24-year-old victim seriously injured. He was treated by paramedics and an air ambulance doctor, but despite the specialist care provided was sadly declared dead at the scene.

"A 14-year-old girl from Crawley was arrested in south London around 10.20 pm on Wednesday (October 28) on suspicion of murder. A 21-year-old man from London was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to report online or call 101 quoting Operation Parkhead."

The number of killings has exceeded 100 in London for the sixth consecutive year, including 55 fatal stabbings, according to BBC research. At least 12 teenagers have been killed and six victims were under either aged 10 or under.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has promised to make London safer for young people and has admitted that knife crime keeps him awake at night.
