7-Year-Old Girl Dies Suddenly One Minute Into Surgery to Have Tonsils Removed

A 7-year-old girl died just a minute into surgery to have her tonsils removed, her family has said.

Paisley Elizabeth Grace Cogsdill died after her heart stopped during surgery at the Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, South Carolina, on Friday, Fox Carolina reported.

Her parents Austin Cogsdill and Jasmine Truelock said their daughter had been healthy and there was no indication of any medical issues.

The results of an autopsy carried out on Tuesday are expected to give a clearer indication of how she died, they told the station.

"You don't understand why these things happen but we know it was God's plan and that's the only thing that can get us through, cause we know it was God," the girl's grandmother, Mary Beth Truelock, told Fox Carolina.

A GoFundMe page was set up over the weekend to help cover the cost of the girl's funeral. The campaign has since raised more than $30,000.

"No one expects to lose a child at anytime," Maecy Burton, the organizer, wrote on the fundraising page on behalf of the girl's parents. She has been contacted for comment.

She added: "During the wake of this awful time in their lives, I'm humbly asking for help in raising money for Paisley's funeral expenses. This, in addition to prayers would help the family tremendously. Please give if you feel lead to do so. God bless!"

An obituary posted on the website of the Gray Funeral Home in Clinton, South Carolina described Paisley Cogsdill, who was in the second grade at Clinton Elementary School, as a "gifted and talented" straight-A student.

"Her full of joy attitude could be seen in everything she did, from playing T-Ball and softball to performing hip-hop dance routines and gymnastics programs with her friends," it said.

"She enjoyed showing off her craft skills by making arts and crafts but enjoyed giving them away even more. Paisley loved being part of the activities at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, singing and acting in the church plays and being the Angel in the Easter Pageant."

The obituary added: "Her years on earth may have only been seven, but the love she shared will last a lifetime."

A service to celebrate the girl's life will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Clinton followed by a committal service at the Pinelawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
