What Is Girl in the Picture About?
If you found yourself gripped by true-crime documentaries such as Abducted in Plain Sight, American Murder: The Family Next Door and Don't F*** With Cats, you will want to add Girl in the Picture to your watchlist.
The official synopsis teases: "A young mother's mysterious death and her son's subsequent kidnapping blow open a decades-long mystery about the woman's true identity and the murderous federal fugitive at the center of it all."
The woman at the heart of the film is Sharon Marshall, a woman who died under mysterious circumstances in 1990, leaving behind a man claiming to be her husband and her son.
Without giving away too many spoilers, it soon transpires after Marshall's death she may not have been exactly who she said she was or who she thought she was. Let's just say, Sharon Marshall was not her real name and her family was not exactly her real family.
The documentary follows the search to solve what really happened to Marshall and who she really was.
In the trailer and accompanying Netflix key art, there is an image of Marshall and her father, Franklin Floyd, posing in a family portrait, but behind the image is a huge, dark, and disturbing secret that took more than a decade to come to light.
One of those secrets is the fact her father is not only a fugitive and felon with multiple allegations against him, including abduction, molestation, robbery, and assault but he is not who he says he is.
Investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck, who first wrote about the story of Sharon Marshall in his novels A Beautiful Child and Finding Sharon, serves as the film's executive producer.
He also appears in the documentary, sharing his knowledge about the case and the lengthy investigation.
Birkbeck eerily teases in the Netflix trailer: "The only person that knew her real identity was her father."
One this is for sure, viewers will not believe the jaw-dropping true story and secrets that are set to unfold in Girl in the Picture.
