GoFundMe For Mohammad Anwar, UberEats Driver Killed In Carjacking, Raises Over $400,000

A GoFundMe campaign set up to help the family of an UberEats driver who was killed during an armed carjacking has raised more than $400,000.

Mohammad Anwar, 66, was assaulted with a stun-gun during a carjacking in the 1200 block of Van Street in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release. Two teenage suspects have been charged in connection to the attack.

A graphic video that was posted on Twitter on Saturday shows Anwar, near the driver's side door, in a struggle with the suspects, yelling: "They're thieves. This is my car!"

The video showed the suspects speeding off with Anwar still hanging onto the vehicle, and then crashing the car. The teenage girls were both seen climbing out of the vehicle unscathed while Anwar lay injured in the street.

Police said Anwar was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead after "all lifesaving efforts failed."

An MPD spokesman told Newsweek that the department was aware of the video shared on Twitter, but did not comment further.

According to a police report, which was obtained by Newsweek, the juvenile suspects—who have not been identified—were arrested at the scene.

The two girls—aged 13 and 15—have been charged with felony murder and armed carjacking. The 13-year-old is from southeast D.C. while the 15-year-old is from Fort Washington, Maryland.

Anwar, of Springfield, Virginia, was described as a "beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend" on the GoFundMe page set up to pay for his funeral and to support his family. A GoFundMe spokesperson confirmed to Newsweek that the fundraising page was verified.

The page, launched three days ago, had raised $391,247 at the time of publication.

Anwar was "a hard-working Pakistani immigrant who came to the United States to create a better life for him and his family," Lehra Bogino, who said Anwar was her husband's uncle, wrote on the page.

"Words can not describe how our family is feeling currently," she wrote. "Devastation, confusion, shock, anger, heartache, and anguish are just a few that come to mind. We will carry him with us always, but it doesn't take the pain away of losing him so tragically and so unexpectedly soon.

Anwar was working as an UberEats delivery driver "when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence," Bogino wrote.

She described him as the financial provider of the family, adding that the funds raised would be used to "provide a traditional Islamic funeral for him and assist his family with the loss of income."

In an update, she thanked people who sent messages of condolences or donated.

"Although money won't fill the gaping hole that his death has left in our family, it will help remove some of the stress and worry of daily living while we grieve and heal," she wrote. "We can not thank you enough, we are overwhelmed by the kindness and support that everyone has shown."

In a statement, an Uber spokesperson said: "We are devastated by this tragic news and our hearts go out to Mohammad's family during this difficult time. We're grateful the suspects have been arrested and thank the Metropolitan Police Department for their diligence with this investigation."

Bogino has been contacted for additional comment.
