Gold Cup 2021 Schedule: USMNT vs. Martinique Kickoff Time, How to Watch on TV and Online

The U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) can take a decisive step toward the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup when it faces Martinique in Kansas City, Kansas, on Thursday night.

Gregg Berhalter's men got their campaign off to a winning, if somewhat unconvincing, start with a 1-0 win over Haiti on Sunday. They could punch their ticket to the knockout stages if they beat Martinique and Canada avoids defeat against Haiti in Group B's other game on Thursday afternoon.

Should Canada lose to Haiti, winning on Thursday alone wouldn't be enough for the USMNT to secure a berth in the quarterfinals just yet.

Before setting its sights on the knockout stages, however, the U.S. must focus on beating Martinique, which was thrashed 4-1 by Canada on Sunday despite going ahead after just 10 minutes through Emmanuel Riviere's goal.

The USMNT also took an early lead against Haiti, courtesy of a goal from Colorado Rapids defender Sam Vines, but it failed to build on its advantage and was made to work harder than expected by Les Grenadiers, who were missing five players because of COVID.

Speaking after the game, Berhalter admitted the performance had left a lot to be desired.

"I missed the urgency to score more goals, to be dangerous, and to first pass it forward and be aggressive," the USMNT coach told ESPN.

"To me it was way too slow, way too backwards, and not enough intent to turn Haiti around and get them defending in the penalty box.

And then once we're in the penalty box, I didn't like the runs, the movement in the box. I didn't like the service. So from the attacking end, we were disappointed with the intent that we showed tonight."

Good Individual Performances

The good news for Berhalter is that there were some notable individual performances, with Shaquell Moore, Kellyn Acosta, Walker Zimmerman and Gianluca Busio all impressing.

"It's about being patient," Berhalter said, when asked whether the game against Martinique would be a good opportunity to reshuffle the pack and give some new players a chance.

"It's about learning. It's about gathering information on the players and the way we can play with this group. And then adapting."
