'The Good Place' Final Season: Why is the NBC Series Ending After Season 4?

After four years, near-universal critical acclaim and multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, The Good Place is set to end after Season 4, which starts on September 26 on NBC.

Since the news was announced that the metaphysical comedy was coming to a close, the cast and crew have been sharing their memories of the show, with creator Michael Schur explaining why they decided to stop making the series, which airs internationally on Netflix.

Why is The Good Place Ending After Season 4?

In a goodbye to fans, posted to The Good Place Twitter account in June 2019, Schur explained his decision behind ending the series.

He wrote: "After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best as we could, the trajectory of the show. Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons—just over 50 episodes—was the right lifespan. At times over the past few years we've been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making the show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don't want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last.

"I will be forever grateful to NBC and Universal TV for letting us make The Good Place, and for letting us end it on our own schedule. I will also be forever grateful to the creative team, both on-screen and off, for their hard work and dedication to a very weird idea. We ask the question very frequently, on this show, what do we owe each other? The answer, for me, is: I owe all of you a whole lot.

"We look forward to a great final season airing this fall."

Tahani star Jameela Jamil was the first of The Good Place cast to respond on Twitter, writing: "YOU HEARD CORRECT, This next season is the FINAL season of @nbcthegoodplace because Mike Schur is the classiest motherforkingshirtball ever and wanted to leave you at the right time in the right way. We love you and we hope you love our goodbye."

Prior to this confirmation of The Good Place ending, Schur had dropped a number of hints that the show was coming to a close. In December 2018, he told The Hollywood Reporter: "Obviously because of that DNA, where status quos get blown up so frequently, this is not a show that is destined to be on for nine years. It's not a 200-episode, Friends kind of a deal. It's not a hangout show. So, yeah, we've given it a lot of thought, and we have a certain plan, which I think you'll get the sense of in the fairly near future."
