Is Gmail Down? Google Drive Outages Reported in U.S., Europe and Australia

Gmail, the email service offered by Google, was reported to be down Thursday in parts of the U.S. (including California, New York and Washington state), Europe (including the U.K., Spain, Italy, The Netherlands) and Australia (including Sydney, Melbourne and Perth), according to the website Down Detector.

Several users have reported being unable to send emails or attach files to emails, according to various posts on the Community section of the Gmail Help page as well as Twitter.

"User reports indicate Gmail is having problems since 12:36 AM EDT," Down Detector said on its U.S.-based Twitter account.

Many users noted receiving an error message that read either "Oops something went wrong" or "Message could not be sent. Check your network and try again," when attempting to send an email.

Other issues reported included "[Google] Meet recording issues, creating files issues in [Google] Drive, CSV user upload issues in [Google] Admin Console, posting message issues in Google Chat, [Google] Sites adding new pages issues, [Google] Keep issues, [Google] Voice mail issues," the company noted on its G Suite Status Dashboard.

The company has since stated: "The problem with Gmail should be resolved. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support," in a message earlier Thursday posted on the dashboard.

Some users continued to report issues relating to emails since the company's latest status update.

User Alex Gooch reported: "Overnight Gmail has stopped uploading attachments when I use standard view. Every time I try, the attachments seem to take ages to load and eventually I just get an error message saying 'Oops there's a problem'," in a message on the Community section of the Google Help page.

User Laurence Gough wrote: "I've never had a problem sending emails before but since this outage earlier today I still cannot send an email with attachments! Stuck queueing."

Another user, Brad Brockman, reported: "I composed a draft on my computer last night, on Chrome. This morning, from the mail app on my Iphone, I added the recipient's name and sent the email. When I went to check a few minutes later that it had been sent, it was not in my "Sent" folder. I waited a little longer and looked again, only then finding it in my "Trash" folder.

However, a spokesperson for Google told Newsweek: "The issue has been fully resolved."

On Wednesday, Spotify, the major music sharing platform, also stopped working for thousands of users across the U.S. and Europe. When attempting to use the search function, the message, "could not load page," was displayed.
