GOP Senator Bill Hagerty Says 'China's Laughing All the Way to the Bank'

Tennessee Republican Senator Bill Hagerty gave an address on the second day of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas on Saturday. In an interview with Fox News' Griff Jenkins that same day, Hagerty said he talked about "the threats that face our nation," while also slamming President Joe Biden's foreign policies and saying that "China is laughing all the way to the bank."

"What we're seeing right now," Hagerty said in the interview, "in either the knee-jerk policies that Biden has used in collapsing our border, the countdown to the WHO in refunding them, Nordstream Two, letting the Russians have that pipeline, entering the START deal with the Russians and getting nothing in return."

He described the things that have come from the Biden administration with China as well, including "killing the Keystone XL pipeline, stopping all drilling here in America, making us dependent on solar panels from China, on wind turbines from China—China's laughing all the way to the bank."

Hagerty had previously expressed his thoughts on China when he tweeted on Thursday: "Communist China is not our ally."

And on June 30, a separate tweet read: "I'll continue to stand up against Communist China to protect our markets and democracy."

Apart from foreign deals with other countries, Hagerty said that our own country is suffering from the Biden administration.

In critiquing the president's lax border policies, Hagerty said at CPAC that "in America now, every town has become a border town," according to conservative outlet the National Review.

"The criminal elements here in America are thriving under the Biden Administration," he said.

Criminals are benefiting from Biden's failed leadership, not the American people.

In answering a question from his interview with Jenkins on what he sees as the biggest concern in people's minds, Hagerty said that at the core of people's fears, "America is hungry for strong leadership."

The former U.S. ambassador in Japan said that Biden's leadership style is "leading from behind," and said that the world needs America to be at its strongest again.

The world, he said, needs America to be leading "with America's interests at heart, with the interests of our allies at heart, and standing up for the greatness that this nation has always been a founder of."

Former President Donald Trump will be speaking on Sunday, as well as Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton, several other governors, elected leaders and more.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.
