Graduation Party Drive-by Shooting Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured

One person was killed and several more were injured in a drive-by shooting at a graduation party in Salt Lake City, Utah, over the weekend.

Multiple agencies responded to North General Drive in Salt Lake City at around 2 a.m. on Sunday after the authorities received reports of a suspect in a white sedan opening fire at a party, according to Deseret News, who spoke to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

At the scene of the shooting, the police found 20-year-old Sean Amone dead, while four others were transported to a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. The hospitalized victims are in stable condition and are expected to survive.

Salt Lake Police Lt. Gary Trost said that the authorities were unsure how many people were in attendance at the party or how many shots were fired, but confirmed that the victims were all either 19 or 20 years old.

Larry Madden, the Superintendent of the Salt Lake City Schools District, sent an email to the parents of schools in the area, confirming that all five victims had attended facilities in the district.

"We were deeply saddened to hear this devastating news," Madden wrote in the email obtained by Fox 13. "We know many of you have been impacted by this tragedy and wanted to offer our support as district and school administration."

The district is offering counseling at schools in the area from Monday to Thursday this week, as Madden asked parents and guardians "to please keep an eye on your student in the coming days and weeks. This is a critical time, especially given that school is about to let out for the summer."

Two of the victims were 2021 graduates from West High School, while Amone and another victim had graduated from the facility in the previous year. The fifth victim had graduated from Highland High School.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses about Sunday's incident, but Fox 13 reported that they are so far being uncooperative. The authorities are looking for a white, older-model sedan that they believe was involved in the shooting and any information that could lead them to a suspect.

The victim who was killed in today's homicide on General Dr. has been identified as 20 year old Sean Amone. Other victims are being treated for their injuries. If you have information about this homicide please call 801-799-3000 and reference case 21-96966. pic.twitter.com/OOl7BtcTAE

"When we got on the scene, it was very chaotic. There was a lot of people on scene," Trost said. "Our homicide squad is busily engaged right now in trying to locate and talk to witnesses and anybody that had a chance to hear or see anything."

Newsweek has contacted the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake City Schools District for comment on the shooting.
