The Great is Hulu's latest new release, coming to the streaming service this May. The trailer for the show, which is penned by the writer of The Favourite, is streaming now.

When is The Great out on Hulu?

The release date for The Great on Hulu is Friday, May 15, when all 10 episodes of the comedy will be released at once onto the streamer.

Who is in the cast of The Great?

Leading the cast as the future Catherine the Great is Elle Fanning, star of Maleficent, The Neon Demon and Super 8. She is playing the legendary Russian monarch previously portrayed on screen by noted actors like Marlene Dietrich, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Helen Mirren, who played an older version of the character in a HBO show last year.

Speaking to Variety, Fanning said of her character: "It starts when Catherine is quite young and she arrives in Russia. She's extremely optimistic and open and romantic and slightly naive to what is about to happen to her life. She's going to marry Peter, who is the emperor of Russia. She meets him, and he is definitely not anything that she thought he was going to be. Reality hits her in her face, and she quickly realizes that she needs to kill her husband for her life to be OK."

Playing Catherine's husband, the Russian Tsar Peter III, is Nicholas Hoult, who previously appeared in About a Boy, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Favourite, which was written by the same screenwriter as The Great, Tony McNamara.

Also starring in the cast of The Great are Eye in the Sky's Phoebe Fox, The Umbrella Academy's Adam Godley, Bohemian Rhapsody's Gwilym Lee and Sacha Dhawan, most recently seen playing the classic villain of The Master in Doctor Who.

What is The Great about?

The Hulu plot synopsis for The Great reads: "The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia's history. Season 1 is a fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change.

"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter."

Speaking to Deadline, writer Tony McNamara revealed that it was actually the script for The Great that led to Yorgos Lanthimos picking him to write The Favourite. Asked how his new Hulu show begins, he said: "We pick it up with Catherine more or less arriving in Russia to discover Peter, the emperor that she's married. And of course, as was traditional, they'd never met, so she arrives not really knowing who she's going to meet and what he's going to be like. Or even what Russia's like at the time. It's a great entrance to any TV show I guess, because she discovers this crazy world that she's now a part of."

The Great is released on Hulu on Friday, May 15.
