How To Throw and Grab a Snowball in 'GTA 5 Online' on PC, Xbox Series X and PS5

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V's Christmas update allows players to scoop up snowballs and then throw them at each other for fun, or possibly with the intention of killing.

Games like Fortnite and Pokemon GO have been in the holiday spirit for over a week now, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been gearing up for its Toy Day celebrations for the entire month of December.

By comparison, GTA V is relatively late to the party as the game waited until December 23 to drop its own "Festive Surprise" update. Turning the city of Los Santos into a winter wonderland, this patch sees major landmarks undergoing a holiday makeover, themed clothing items up for grabs and even a Gallivanter Baller ST being given away as a free log-in bonus.

In addition to this, the usually sweltering map has been covered in a thick blanket of snow, which makes for nice big change of scenery. It's not just a superficial transformation though, as the colder weather also has an implication for gameplay.

Namely, it enables players to get into light-hearted snowball fights with each other. Much like the visual makeover, this wholesome interaction is out of the ordinary for GTA Online, which is mostly known for rewarding murder and all manner of criminal activity.

That being said, it is possible for these snowball fights to turn ugly, as you can technically kill with the projectiles if you are persistent enough. According to the official GTA wiki, it takes three snowballs to kill an NPC civilian and up to 10 to take out a rival player. Meanwhile, you can also use them to damage property and take out car headlights if you are so inclined.

Regardless of how you intend to use snowballs (whether it is just for harmless fun or to indulge in acts of villainy), you will need to actually make them in the first place. This guide will explain how to do so for each platform's version of GTA V.

How To Make Snowballs in 'GTA 5'

Snowballs are a limited-time item in GTA V, as they only appear during these annual Festive Surprise updates. Given that, you will want to take advantage of the fun mechanic while you still can.

To build up your arsenal, you will first need to log into GTA Online, as snowballs are not available in the single-player story mode. From there, you will need to ensure that you are unarmed and then stand directly atop a snow-covered patch of land.

Once you are in position, you just need to press a specific button (dependent on what system you are using) to pick up a snowball. You can hold up to nine of these projectiles at a time.

The controls for picking up a snowball on Xbox, PlayStation and PC are as follows:

  • On PS4/ PS5: Press the left d-pad button
  • On Xbox One/ Xbox Series X: Press the left button
  • On PC: Press the "G" key.

Once you have stocked up on snowballs, you can throw them around like you would a hand grenade or C4 explosive.

To equip them, just open up the weapon wheel and select the snowball icon. From there, the standard controls for aiming and firing apply.
