Gunman Opens Fire Aboard Bus in Michigan, Hitting Passengers After Thanksgiving Holiday

A man allegedly opened fire on his fellow bus passengers in Kalamazoo, Michigan, injuring three people Saturday before he was shot dead by police.

Officers responded to the "active shooter situation" at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center at about 9:15 a.m. after they received a call reporting that shots were fired at the bus station, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety wrote in a series of tweets Saturday morning.

Upon arrival, the officers found multiple victims who suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.

Officers shot the alleged shooter—who was identified as 54-year-old Anthony Oliver—as he stepped off the bus, Police Chief Vernon Coakley told Michigan Live. He was given medical assistance at the scene before being taken to a local hospital, police said.

Oliver had died by Saturday afternoon, WOOD-TV, reported. He allegedly exchanged gunfire with several officers after shooting the three victims. No officers were hurt.

It was not known if Oliver knew the other passengers.

In total, three people were shot in their extremities, and their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening, Coakley told Michigan Live. They were taken to local hospitals for treatment

"The suspect boarded a bus and began firing rounds," Coakley said.

Police had not provided information about a possible motive or what events led up to the shooting, which remains under investigation.

Streets near the station were blocked off and the city's metro bus services were suspended for the rest of Saturday as police investigate.

Michigan State Police will also investigate the shooting because shots were fired by local police.

Newsweek reached out to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety for comment Saturday afternoon but had not heard back by publication. This story will be updated with any response.

This was the latest in a string of shootings across the United States that have left several people injured in the past few days leading up to and during the Thanksgiving weekend.

On Friday, a shooting at a mall in Durham, North Carolina, left one man in critical condition and injured another man and 10-year-old, according to The Raleigh News and Observer.

The day before, a woman was shot in the parking lot of a Walmart in Louisiana. She was hit in the upper torso and was taken to a local hospital. Her condition was listed as stable.

Also on Thursday, a Pennsylvania man was also killed by a stray bullet while he was eating his Thanksgiving meal with his family.

A shooting in a Walmart parking lot north of Austin, Texas, Wednesday night left one man dead.
