Harry Styles Ariel Pictures Go Viral—But He Already Turned a Role in 'The Little Mermaid' Down

Harry Styles' fans have been delighted by photos of the singer dressed as Ariel of The Little Mermaid emerging, sparking calls for Styles to play her in the upcoming live-action remake of the 1989 Disney animated movie. However, Styles has already turned down another role in the film.

The photos of Styles dressed as the red-headed mermaid from a photoshoot the "Watermelon Sugar" singer did for Saturday Night Live in 2019 emerged this week and were quickly shared widely across social media.

In the viral photos, Styles is seen wearing a long red wig, a white shell bra, and a long, green mermaid's tail—but that's where the similarity to the Disney princess ends. Styles accessorized his take on The Little Mermaid with a champagne flute and a cigarette.

Fans are sharing the photos on social media and joking about the singer starring in Disney movie, like Twitter user @fairytailhrry who said: "Sources say that Harry Styles will be playing the role of Ariel in the upcoming Disney movie 'The Little Mermaid'"

But Styles appearing in The Little Mermaid is not meant to be, as the Grammy-award-winning singer has already turned down a role in the movie. Styles was in talks to play Ariel's love interest Prince Eric, opposite singer Halle Bailey, of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle.

However, the role went to Jonah Hauer-King, after Styles said he wanted to focus on music.

Styles spoke about the movie and told The Face magazine in 2019: "I want to put music out and focus on that for a while.

"But everyone involved in it was amazing," he said, "So I think it's going to be great. I'll enjoy watching it, I'm sure."

He also told Roman Kemp on Capital Breakfast in October 2019: "I had a meeting with Rob Marshall, the director, who is the most wonderful man.

"He's great, and it was just honestly a few things and it just wasn't ... It's going to be an amazing film."

Styles went on to say: "Honestly, they shoot for so long and I wanna tour next year and stuff, maybe, potentially, maybe not—I haven't announced that yet, but maybe. Yeah, it just didn't quite line up, work out."

Due to the pandemic, the Harry Styles 2020 tour has been postponed until this summer. However, Styles has kept busy in the meantime.

Despite turning down the role in The Little Mermaid, Styles has not shied away from the big screen. He will appear opposite Florence Pugh in Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling and has begun filming My Policeman in Brighton, England, alongside Emma Corrin.
