Is Kate Bishop Related to Clint Barton in 'Hawkeye'?

Hawkeye is now streaming on Disney+ and with it comes the introduction of a brand new character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): Kate Bishop.

Kate (played by Hailee Steinfeld) drops into Clint Barton's life quite unexpectedly after taking his Ronin suit and drawing the attention of his enemies, and it's up to a disgruntled Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to sort out the mess.

Fans have speculated whether the show will see Kate take up the Hawkeye mantle from Clint, which she does in the Marvel comics.

It has also prompted some to even wonder if the two characters are, in fact, related to one another.

Are Kate Bishop and Clint Barton Related?

In the Marvel comics, Kate is the youngest daughter of Manhattan socialites Derek and Eleanor, with her mother passing away when she was a young girl.

Her father went on to remarry a woman named Heather, who was only three years older than Kate and attended the same school.

This is now how things have panned out in the Disney+ show, as it is Kate's father who dies in the opening scenes and her mother (played by Vera Farmiga) is set to remarry a man named Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton).

Clint, meanwhile, is seen with his three children in the show: Cooper (Ben Sakamoto), Nathaniel (Cade Woodward) and Lila (Ava Russo).

Kate and Clint aren't related to one another by blood in either the comics or the Disney+ show, they are instead linked by the Hawkeye moniker.

Will Kate Bishop Take Over as Hawkeye From Clint Barton?

In the Marvel comics, Kate does become Hawkeye but both she and Clint share the same superhero name.

Disney+'s Hawkeye show is based on Matt Fraction and David Aja's comic series and in it Kate is Clint's protégé, which appears to be how things will play out in the live-action series (if the first two episodes are anything to go by).

In fact, Kate is already using the name Hawkeye in Fraction and Aja's comics, and she saves Clint a number of times while in the superhero guise.

She had taken on the Hawkeye mantle following Clint's death in the comics set before Fraction and Aja's comic run but, as is often the case in comics, he came back from the dead.

After learning that Kate was using the Hawkeye name, Clint decides to share the moniker with her and they fight crime together.

It's unclear if the Disney+ show will allow both characters to be Hawkeye, and it seems more likely that Clint will simply hang up his bow and let Kate take over so he can spend time with his family.

Hawkeye is released Wednesdays on Disney+.
