Hahira Police Officer Caleb Abney was conducting a routine traffic stop on the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 when he was hit by a speeding Chevrolet Camaro being driven at around 100 mph, resulting in his death. What was more heartbreaking was that he was to get married in two months. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover funeral costs and provide financial support to his family.
MotorBiscuit reported the tragic news, stating that Abney was at the shoulder of a busy highway, and despite having his flashing emergency lights on, the speeding Camaro still struck him. The impact was such that even the Camaro driver succumbed to his injuries.
Community pays tribute to fallen officer
Abney's sudden passing struck the community at an emotional level. Several law enforcement agencies paid respects to him through a procession, carrying his body to Macon for an autopsy. Onlookers paid their respects, with several motorists even beeping their horns to offer their tribute.

One of Abney's colleagues revealed the pain of losing someone with whom they worked so closely:
“Caleb was a great asset to not only the police department but to the city of Hahira and the whole area that we serve,” the official shared. “Any police agency hurts when they lose one of their own. But to a small agency… you know, it becomes a brother and sisterhood, even closer than most”.

Abney, who passed away at age 25, was brought up in a military family. His mother served as a U.S. Air Force nurse, and thus service was something that came naturally to him. He served as a firefighter with Lowndes County Fire and Rescue before joining the Hahira Police Department. What makes his loss even more devastating is that Abney was set to marry his fiancée, Jordan Hicks, on April 18, 2026.
His family shared in his obituary: “In his short tenure as a Hahira, Georgia Police Officer, Caleb, because of his cheerful personality, had the ability to make people feel ‘OK’ when he gave them a ticket.”
The Hahira Police Department stated: “Officer Abney served our community with honor, courage, and unwavering dedication.”
Financial support
The GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $200,000 was set up to help his family and fiancée in this difficult time. Apart from the procession by the law enforcement agencies, another touching gesture was a celebration of life held at the Lowndes County High School football stadium on March 1, where attendees paid tribute to Abney, remembering his vibrant personality by wearing bright colors.
Our thoughts are with Abney's family during this difficult time.
