House of the Dragon Season 1 is almost at its end, and the finale is likely to bring bloodshed upon the Targaryen household.

The show is based on George R. R. Martin's Fire and Blood, and the book teases several possibilities for what is set to take place in the show's last episode, including which characters could possibly die.

The show has so far largely followed the story points in Fire and Blood, but it has also added things and made tweaks to Martin's plot, such as Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan) faking his own death, rather than being killed as he is in the book.

The penultimate episode ended with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) putting her eldest son Aegon on the Iron Throne upon her husband Viserys II's death, usurping her husband's chosen heir, and daughter from his first marriage, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy).

Martin's book reveals that the next part of the story sees Rhaenyra to prepare for a counterattack by forming her own council and getting as many supporters as she can, with husband Daemon (Matt Smith) and their respective children gearing up for war.

Per Fire and Blood, the early stages of the battle between the Greens (Alicent's supporters) and the Blacks (Rhaenyra's supporters) sees multiple deaths take place, including Rhaenyra's second-born son Lucerys.

In the book, Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) goes up against Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) at Storm's End, and the pair fight each other on dragonback with Lucerys and his dragon Arrax ultimately losing their lives.

It is with this death that the Dance of the Dragons begins in earnest, with both sides out for blood and doing away with any previous notions of diplomacy.

Lucerys' younger brother Joffrey is said to have sworn an oath of vengeance against Aemond for the killing, while Daemon proclaimed that they would have revenge by taking "a son for a son."

This, the book reveals, leads to the death of Queen Helaena and Aegon II's eldest son, Jaehaerys.

Jaehaerys is slain after Helaena is forced to choose between her sons or risk all of her children being murdered, though she originally chose her youngest son Maelor to be killed because she felt he'd be too young to realize what was happening.

While House of the Dragon may not necessarily follow this trajectory, the teaser trailer for the finale suggests that the fight between Lucerys and Aemond will happen as both are seen taking up arms.

House of the Dragon Season 1 concludes on Sunday, October 23, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
