McDonald's is giving away a caramel brownie McFlurry to anyone who has ever thought the McFlurry spoon was a straw, (so, everyone), next week.

"Our McFlurry spoon is misunderstood and every true McDonald's fan understands the struggle of confusing it for a straw," said McDonald's in a press release. "While we can't change the iconic hollow spoon (a key piece of the mixing process), we can help ease the sting of your facepalm upon figuring out how to use it."

With its wide, hollow end, it's no surprise that people mistake the spoon for a straw. However, the hollow, square end does serve a purpose other than confusing those enjoying their first McFlurry—it attaches to the McFlurry machine and is used to mix in the toppings. Who knew?

McDonald's is not giving away just any free McFlurry to those who have made a spoon/straw blunder—it's giving away the soon-to-be-launched caramel brownie McFlurry.

The caramel brownie McFlurry, featuring vanilla soft serve, with brownie pieces and a caramel topping blended throughout, was first announced on April 5, and now, the wait is almost over.

"As our fans rejoice in the changing of the seasons, we're excited to give them a new way to enjoy our most iconic dessert," said McDonald's senior director of culinary, Chad Schafer.

"In fact, the flavors in our new Caramel Brownie McFlurry are inspired by that first-warm-day-of-the-year feeling. The cool and creamy soft serve mixed with fudgy brownie pieces and sweet, gooey caramel makes every refreshing bite worth savoring."

The caramel brownie McFlurry debuted in 2017 in Canada—where the classic McFlurry was created. The flavor will debut in U.S. restaurants for the first time on Monday, May 3.

How to get a free caramel brownie McFlurry

To celebrate the launch of the caramel brownie McFlurry in the U.S.—and to "help ease the sting of your facepalm upon figuring out how to use" the McFlurry spoon—McDonald's is giving away free ice cream.

McDonald's customers can claim a free regular size caramel brownie McFlurry on Tuesday, May 4, by scanning the offer code in the McDonald's App and picking it up at participating McDonald's restaurants, with no purchase necessary.

Alternatively, from May 3 until May 9, you can also get a free regular-size caramel brownie McFlurry when you make a minimum purchase of $15 exclusively on McDelivery with Uber Eats.
