Iowa couldn’t hold a 21-7 lead on its way to a 26-21 loss at then-No. 18 USC that dropped it to 4-3 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes took their largest lead on a trick play with 3:24 left in the first half, with wide receiver Reece Vander Zee throwing a five-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Mark Gronowski. Gronowski was 12-of-19 for 132 yards and accounted for three scores with a pass, run, and reception. Kamari Moulton ran for 90 yards on 15 carries, and Dayton Howard caught a two-yard TD pass.
Michigan State took a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter but never scored again in a 28-10 loss to visiting Penn State last week. Elijah Tau-Tolliver had the only touchdown for the Spartans with a 57-yard run on MSU’s first play from scrimmage. He finished with 79 yards on six carries while Alessio Milivojevic was 17-of-27 for 128 yards. Tau-Tolliver also caught eight passes for 73 yards, but the offense finished with only 229 yards on the day.
The Spartans won last year’s meeting at home 32-20 but trail the all-time series with Iowa 25-23-2.
