'Shark Attack': How to Watch the New Robin Roberts Special Tonight

On Thursday night, ABC will show a brand new Robin Roberts-hosted 20/20 hour-long special titled "Shark Attack," which will chronicle teen Paige Winter's life after losing her leg to a bull shark in North Carolina.

In a Good Morning America First Look, Roberts said that the special chronicles both Winter's year-long journey she had following the attack. "Roberts, anchor and co-executive producer, shares with viewers this inspiring story of triumph over adversity: from the complicated surgeries and painful therapies that followed the attack, to Winter's first steps on her new prosthetic leg, and through all the rites of passage an American teen faces in her senior year of high school, from homecoming and the prom to graduation," a press release describes.

Winter was attacked by a shark in June 2019, when she was 17 years old. In a clip that aired on GMA, Winter and her father explained exactly what it was like the day she was attacked. Winter said that the water was "murky" due to rain from the night before, when she stepped on what was likely the shark, thinking it was her father, Charlie Winter, playing a prank.

Winter said after first stepping on the shark, she realized she was in pain and then the shark dragged her under. "A lot of thoughts were going through my head," Winter said. "Am I going to drown or am I going to bleed out? I really don't want to die. So, I started praying." Winter's father, who's a firefighter, pulled his daughter out of the shark's grip and hit it, as beachgoers called 911. According to a press release, Winter was airlifted to a trauma center, where she lost two fingers and her leg after multiple surgeries.

Roberts told GMA that she spoke to Winter a few weeks after the attack, where they decided to chronicle what happened in the year after the attack. She said that the special captures her first steps with her prosthetic leg "as well as those big senior high school year moments" such as prom and graduation. "You'll also see that dramatic moment, when Paige returns for the first time to the very beach where she nearly lost her life," Roberts told GMA.

In a clip that's been released ahead of the special airing, Winter meets one of her musical heroes: former American Idol contestant and current Queen singer Adam Lambert, who she spoke to about her desire to pursue music and also help the environment.

In another clip, she met with a man who helped save her life immediately after the attack by offering his belt to use as a tourniquet on her leg. In an interview, the man named Roger Hoot said he was grateful that his belt was able to help Winter. Winter said she'd "thought about him a lot," after the accident, even though she didn't know anything about him.

"Shark Attack" will air on ABC at 10 p.m. ET (9 p.m. CT) on Thursday night.
