How to Watch Memorial Service for Billy Evans, Capitol Police Officer Killed in Car-Ramming Attack
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday for William "Billy" Evans, the Capitol police officer killed on April 2 after a car rammed into two officers at a barricade outside of the U.S. Capitol.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi first announced that a memorial service for Evans will take place on Tuesday while also stating that he "will lie in honor in the United States Capitol Rotunda."
"It is now the great and solemn privilege of the House of Representatives and the Senate to convey the appreciation and the sadness of the Congress and Country for the heroic sacrifice of Officer Evans with a lying-in-honor ceremony in the U.S. Capitol," Pelosi and Schumer said in a statement on April 6.
"It is our hope that this tribute will be a comfort to the family of Officer Evans, particularly his children Logan and Abigail, as will the knowledge that so many Americans mourn with and pray for them at this sad time."
According to the statement issued by Pelosi and Schumer, the memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. ET on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol. A Congressional tribute will also be held at 11 a.m. ET.
Members of the Capitol Police Department can attend a viewing period, which begins at noon ET and members of Congress are also invited to the viewing period, which will last until 6 p.m. ET.
"A ceremonial departure will occur at 6:30 p.m." the statement from Pelosi and Schumer stated.
The memorial service will only be opened to invited guests, due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the service will be streamed on C-Span's website that can be found here. C-Span will also stream the memorial service on its YouTube page, which can be found here.
On April 2, the Capitol Police Department first reported that a vehicle had rammed into the Capitol's North barricade and struck two officers. After ramming the barricade, the man, identified as 25-year-old Noah Green, exited the vehicle with a knife and ran toward both officers. One of the officers fired a weapon at Green, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after.
Evans and the other officer, who was not identified by police, were transported to local hospitals shortly after the incident. Evans was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Officer William 'Billy' Evans this afternoon from injuries he sustained following an attack at the North Barricade by a lone assailant. Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years," Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman wrote in a statement.
"He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division's First Responder's Unit. Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers."
