Why Do Dogs Howl?

Howling is a common form of communication among dogs that can be traced back to the most famous howling canines—wolves.

Domesticated dogs descended from wolves more than 15,000 years ago, veterinarian Dr. Tiffany Tupler wrote in a May 2023 article for PetMD.

While from a behavioral perspective, canines are no closer to wolves than humans are to primates, "their evolutionary development helps us understand some of their unique traits," the veterinarian said.

Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist and the American Kennel Club's family dog director, told Newsweek in March 2022 that howling is "a form of communication for dogs that is hard-wired."

A spokesperson for VCA Animal Hospitals agreed, telling Newsweek in March 2022: "Like many canine behaviors, howling has ancestral roots. In the wild, safety-conscious wolves in the woods bellowed to announce their location to other members of their pack family."

Tupler explained that wolves also howl to assemble their pack, coordinate their hunting activities and establish territories.

"While dogs don't have the same range of complex emotions as humans do, they may use howling to express an emotional state. When dogs are excited, for example, they may howl to show their excitement. Similarly, dogs may howl when they are upset, stressed, anxious, or lonely. Howling can also be a sign of frustration or boredom," the veterinarian said.
