I Can't Stop Thinking About the Mounts in 'Immortals Fenyx Rising'

Immortals Fenyx Rising is set to drop later this year and will bring an open-world action RPG filled with mythological creatures, gods and heroes.

Players will be able to enjoy an original story based on Greek mythology, and explore vast open lands where you'll fight ancient enemies, solve puzzles and even befriend animals to use as mounts.

That last bit may be a bit off topic, but I can't help it, the mounts in Fenyx Rising are what I can't stop thinking about.

When I had my four-hour guided demo of Immortals Fenyx Rising I was instantly fascinated with the ability to befriend and mount various animals. In a game that have cyclops, flying harpies and other creatures, I want to know what animals in this world can help me take them down.

Exploring only the first parts of the demo, there was only one animal I could use as a mount, a large buck that the demoist befriended by slowly sneaking up towards it and holding the tame button that prompted on the screen. After some time, he was able to tame the mount and use it to race across the lands faster than on foot.

While you will later get wings to fly across the land, and there's a fast-travel feature on the map, mounts are still very useful in Fenyx Rising. Not only will you travel faster, it could be used to give players a boost when you jump off to attack enemies or to launch you over a cliff before you start flying.

And before you think that going off the cliff with your mount will harm the virtual animal, it won't. Your mount will be automatically transported someplace for when you need to call upon it again. It's god magic, don't think about it too hard.

Another cool trick that my demoist showed me was when he was quickly falling from the sky he would summon the mount to land on instead of hitting the ground, which would have surely been game over.

Fenyx Rising has a stamina system that limits how much sprinting, climbing, swimming and flying you can do, so if you find yourself running low on stamina and you're still 50 feet in the air, you can save your life by summoning the mount. It's an impressive feat, one that will be tricky to master.

I was told that there will be various different species of animals to mount during the game, each with their own special abilities. However, you cannot upgrade your mount.

Ok, that's understandable there's plenty of other upgrades players will be able to do in Fenyx Rising, but why can't I tame a bear? Early on you'll run into wild bears who will react to your presence, but you can't tame it like you can the buck.

That fact bugged me through the rest of the demo. I can mount giant deer, and armored horses, but a bear I can't? I'm being facetious here, but how awesome would it be to charge at a cyclops swinging your axe while riding on a bear? RIP dreams of owning a war bear.

Immortals Fenyx Rising will be available on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series X, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia and PC on December 3.
