Incumbent GOP Senators in Arizona, Maine and Iowa Trailing Democratic Challengers: Poll
Incumbent Republican senators in Arizona, Maine and Iowa currently trail their Democratic counterparts, according to a new poll.
The poll, which was conducted by Data for Progress, surveyed likely voters in each of the three states from September 23 to September 28 and found three Republican Senators—Martha McSally from Arizona, Joni Ernst from Iowa and Susan Collins from Maine—at risk of losing their seat in the November election.
According to the poll, in the Arizona special election, McSally, who was appointed by Governor Doug Ducey following the vacancy left by John McCain's death, currently trails Democratic candidate Mark Kelly by nine points. Fifty-one percent of respondents in Arizona said they'd vote for Kelly, while 42 percent sided with McSally. The remaining 7 percent of voters are currently undecided.
The poll surveyed 808 likely voters in Arizona and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
In Maine, Collins, who has held the seat since 1996 and is seeking her fourth re-election, currently trails Democratic candidate Sara Gideon by five points. Forty-six percent of respondents in Maine said they'd vote for Gideon, compared to 41 percent that sided with Collins. According to the poll, Gideon's lead increased to eight points (50 to 42 percent) when respondents who supported the two independent candidates; Lisa Savage and Max Linn, as well as those who said they didn't know, were asked to pick between the two major party candidates.
The poll surveyed 718 likely voters in Maine and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
A previous poll conducted by the New York Times/Sienna College found similar results for the Senate races in Arizona and Maine. This poll, which surveyed voters in both states from September 10 to September 15, found Kelly ahead of McSally by eight points in Arizona (50 to 42 percent), while Gideon led Collins by five points in Maine (49 to 44 percent).
According to the poll, in Iowa, Ernst currently trails Democratic candidate Theresa Greenfield by just one point, as 46 percent said they'd vote for Greenfield and 45 percent said Ernst. Nine percent of respondents are currently undecided.
The Iowa poll surveyed 743 likely voters in the state and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
The Data for Progress poll also surveyed voters in South Carolina for their choice between incumbent Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic candidate Jamie Harrison. According to the poll, 45 percent of voters in South Carolina said they'd vote for Graham while 44 percent chose Harrison.
The poll also asked respondents in each state who they plan to vote for in the presidential election and found Democratic candidate Joe Biden ahead of President Donald Trump by four points in Arizona (50 to 46 percent) and 14 points in Maine (55 to 41 percent). In Iowa, the poll found Trump ahead by five points (50 to 45 percent).
