International School of Boston

The International School of Boston (ISB) is an independent, non-profit, age 2 - grade 12 multilingual school. With a mix of local and international student body and faculty, ISB is one of the oldest, most respected bilingual schools in the United States. Located in Cambridge, this world-class accredited academic institution places the development of the bilingual brain at the heart of its mission.

Whether students join us in Maternelle, Lower, Middle or Upper School, ISB graduates stand apart from other day schools' graduates, because their knowledge of the world is enhanced by learning across the disciplines in multiple languages and by connecting with diverse classmates from more than 40 countries.

Preschool-grade 8 students learn in both French and English. Our oldest students, grades 9-12, can choose a curriculum that is English- or French-based. These students graduate with an American high school diploma and choose between two internationally renowned diplomas, the French or the International Baccalaureate, giving them the opportunity to succeed at leading universities in the United States, France, and around the world.

Students entering grade 9 can integrate our International Program (IP), in order to continue with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in 11th grade. This is the sixteenth year of the IB Program at ISB. The top score from the class of 2020 was 40, which is a score only 3% of candidates around the world achieve. Last year's passing rate was 93%, which is above the world average of 78%. Fifty percent of all ISB students who gained the IB Diploma, met the requirements and have earned the exclusive IB Bilingual Diploma. Students can select English, French, Spanish, German and Mandarin.

As of September 2021, we are introducing a Spanish-language program. Students in Mid-K-grade 1 will participate in the Éveil aux Langues program. Students in grades 2-5 will all start learning Spanish at the beginner level, and the goal is for our 5th graders to graduate from Lower School with 4 years of Spanish. Spanish classes will not be to the detriment of either the French or English ones, and the French curriculum will still be followed in an additional language. At the Middle School level, students will be able to learn their third language (Spanish or German) by ability level. They will take beginner or advanced classes, according to their aptitudes in the language. In Upper School, students in the French track will be able to continue to study their third language according to their ability level. In the International Program, students will now be able to choose between French and Spanish as a second language in grade 9.

One of the many beneficial programs offered to Upper School students at ISB is the "Agora Monde" platform allowing them to connect with 60,000+ students and alumni from Lycées in the AEFE (agency for French education abroad) network around the world. They also have the opportunity to study for up to a trimester at a partner school abroad. Our younger students take advantage of all that the Greater Boston area has to offer in terms of culture, arts, and history through experiential learning programs. ISB also has a very strong athletic program that includes its Blue Terriers Varsity Interscholastic soccer, basketball, volleyball and fencing teams.
