International School of Los Angeles

The International School of Los Angeles is a non-profit, independent, international preschool through 12th grade school committed to bilingual education and academic excellence in a nurturing environment that encourages personal initiative, creativity, and curiosity. The School's mission is to develop bilingual critical thinkers who are open-minded, confident and caring, and equipped to thrive in a diverse, competitive world.

With five Los Angeles-area campuses, and over 1,000 students, the School holds accreditation from the French Ministry of Education, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), and the International Baccalaureate® (IB), and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the National Honor Society (NHS).

Recognized as one of the most academically challenging private high schools in the United States, the International School of Los Angeles has been leading the way in bilingual education for more than 40 years. Since 1978, the School has been instilling the love of learning in all its students through small classes and low student-to-teacher ratios. With over 65 nationalities and 40 spoken languages represented at the School, students study and live in a global community every day.

The School's curriculum is a bilingual journey with a carefully composed trajectory in English and French. At the end of this journey, students are bilingual and bicultural, exploring concepts and transferring skills with ease in both languages. By the time they graduate, most students also master a third language or more.

All students study a common bilingual program from preschool through 8th grade, after which they choose one of two rigorous programs that culminates in the International Baccalaureate® Diploma or the French baccalauréat. In the 2019-20 school year, the School extended its international track to the start of 9th grade, thereby realigning its entry points to reflect the US educational model, further internationalizing its curriculum, and providing students an additional year of preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. After 10th grade, students formally apply to, and enroll in, the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme or the French baccalauréat program including the OIB (option internationale du baccalauréat). All choices provide academically demanding and well-balanced courses of study that meet the needs of highly motivated students and empower them to be successful citizens of the world. Shared elements include multiple-language study, a minimum of one advanced laboratory science class, challenging philosophy courses, and the completion of university-level research work and writing. Students who join the School's international track in 9th-12th grade are not required to demonstrate proficiency in French but should display an interest in learning another language.

Quickly adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, the School transitioned from in-person to remote learning in just two school days in mid-March 2020, offering classes in both synchronous and asynchronous modes.

Despite the challenges of finishing the school year online, the School's 2020 graduates achieved some of the best academic results in school history! The French baccalauréat candidates were all successful, 100% of them earning honors (avec mention) and 50% achieving the highest honors (mention très bien). These standout achievements were complemented by those of the International Baccalaureate® cohort. Of the School's IB Diploma candidates, 100% were awarded their Diplomas (compared to a 79% pass rate for the Northern Hemisphere), with 77% earning the prestigious Bilingual Diploma (compared to 31% for the Northern Hemisphere). The School's IB candidates achieved a mean of 35.7/45, surpassing the world mean of 29.92 by 5.78 points. Finally, two students scored 40/45. These stellar exam results were accompanied by the emergence of the School's first ever National Merit Scholar and bolstered by strong college matriculations, with 66% of seniors earning acceptances into a Top 100 Global University (US News & World Report).

The International School of Los Angeles looks forward to building on the recent achievements of its students and community as it strives to fulfill its vision to be the premier international school in Los Angeles.
