If ever there was a future proof career area to work in, it would be the field of Engineering. With an ever more densely populated world, and an accelerating rate of climate change, the demand for engineers, especially in the civil, environmental and materials areas is greater than ever and will only increase going forward.

Civil engineers design and develop cities, towns and other population areas and are typically federally employed. They are charged with designing and creating efficient dwelling, transportation and infrastructure that meets the needs of the existing population while being scalable for future needs.

Environmental engineers, as the name would suggest, are focused on preserving and improving the environment, working in areas such as waste and flood water management, soil quality, ozone depletion, air pollution, urban noise pollution, and others. As well as developing solutions in these areas, environmental engineers liaise with local and federal governments on plans and permits, oversee construction, and ensure compliance throughout the building process.

Materials Engineers are focused on researching and developing suitable materials that are used various stages of a variety of manufacturing processes. Efficiency, longevity, and environmental impact are key considerations when deciding on what material to use in a specific purposes and applications. Plastics are a key current area where the conventional thinking is being challenged in the light of global conservation and environmental concerns.

Other popular areas of engineering specialty include industrial, mechanical, electrical, chemical, marine, and biomedical.

Whatever field you decide to specialize in, the most important first step is deciding where to earn your credentials.

Monash University is honoured to be the first Australian university to receive a license to operate in China, one of the world's largest and fastest-growing economies, via a partnership with SEU, one of China's top national research universities.

The SEU-Monash partnership focuses on world-class research and training opportunities, including postgraduate programs, collaborative multidisciplinary research, and industry engagement. It aims at producing postgraduates and researchers with ideas to change people's lives in the region and the world for the better. The partnership consists of the Joint Graduate School (JGS) and the Joint Research Institute (JRI).

Leading Architecture Programs in Asia

Architecture involves more than just planning building structures - the discipline can encompass many diverse areas and specializations, some of which include:

Restoration

Restoration architects conduct the sympathetic and considerate restoration and conservation of historically and culturally important buildings and structures.

Urban Planning

This discipline requires adaptability and problem-solving skills on a large scale and challenges the architect to render urban designs and solutions that are scalable to economic and demographic changes in the population. Planners also have to give consideration to environmental and sustainability factors.

Landscape Architects

Architecture in this area is interwoven with globalization and climate change considerations. The discipline principally covers landscapes, infrastructure, public areas, agriculture and forestry.

Extreme Architects

As the world becomes more effected by the ravishes of climate change, the need for architects to be able to design structures that can function in extreme conditions that are often caused by heat waves, deforestation, regular flooding or hurricanes.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Architecture Department Programs - Bachelor of Architectural Studies and Master of Architecture - are designed to empower a new generation of architects committed to improving the built environment and leading through meaningful design innovation. The programs provide students with a holistic education, enabling them with creative abilities, cultural background, technical skills, and professional knowledge to pursue an impactful career in architecture, both in Macao and internationally.

Leading Urban Planning Programs 2021

Urban planning is a unique and rewarding field, involving creating and shaping environments that have a direct impact on the communities inhabiting them. Urban planners work with local officials to develop solutions that encompass social, economic, and environmental considerations. Some specialty areas include:

Community development and housing

With the global population increasing and the continued migration of people from rural areas to densely populated cities, increasing consideration must be given to affordable and efficient housing solutions.

Transportation

Hand in hand with the population density increase, the demands on roads, railways, bridges and tunnels grows as more people use them. Urban planners in this area work on solutions that solve today's problems but are also scalable for the future.

Resilient communities

Climate changes are bringing communities into more conflict with the elements around them – one example being the increased risk of flooding in coastal areas. Here, urban planners might work with the community to design parks that aid in natural draining of water as well as doubling as recreational space, or with the city government to develop infrastructure such as pumps and piping that can move vast quantities of flood water away from inhabited areas.

The STEM-designated Urban Planning and Policy Development program at Rutgers University's Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, ranked #3 according to the Planetizen Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs, educates innovative people who wish to combine social concerns with analytic skills.

In an increasingly urbanized and interconnected world, the convergence of disciplines—urban planning, public policy, public health, health administration and informatics—creates the opportunity to understand the importance of these disciplines in livability and health and well-being. Students come to the Bloustein School to be part of the solution to create a better tomorrow.
