Architecture involves more than just planning building structures - the discipline can encompass many diverse areas and specializations, some of which include:

Restoration

Restoration architects conduct the sympathetic and considerate restoration and conservation of historically and culturally important buildings and structures.

Urban Planning

This discipline requires adaptability and problem-solving skills on a large scale and challenges the architect to render urban designs and solutions that are scalable to economic and demographic changes in the population. Planners also have to give consideration to environmental and sustainability factors.

Landscape Architects

Architecture in this area is interwoven with globalization and climate change considerations. The discipline principally covers landscapes, infrastructure, public areas, agriculture and forestry.

Extreme Architects

As the world becomes more effected by the ravishes of climate change, the need for architects to be able to design structures that can function in extreme conditions that are often caused by heat waves, deforestation, regular flooding or hurricanes.

Leading Urban Planning Programs 2021

Urban planning is a unique and rewarding field, involving creating and shaping environments that have a direct impact on the communities inhabiting them. Urban planners work with local officials to develop solutions that encompass social, economic, and environmental considerations. Some specialty areas include:

Community development and housing

With the global population increasing and the continued migration of people from rural areas to densely populated cities, increasing consideration must be given to affordable and efficient housing solutions.

Transportation

Hand in hand with the population density increase, the demands on roads, railways, bridges and tunnels grows as more people use them. Urban planners in this area work on solutions that solve today's problems but are also scalable for the future.

Resilient communities

Climate changes are bringing communities into more conflict with the elements around them – one example being the increased risk of flooding in coastal areas. Here, urban planners might work with the community to design parks that aid in natural draining of water as well as doubling as recreational space, or with the city government to develop infrastructure such as pumps and piping that can move vast quantities of flood water away from inhabited areas.

The STEM-designated Urban Planning and Policy Development program at Rutgers University's Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, ranked #3 according to the Planetizen Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs, educates innovative people who wish to combine social concerns with analytic skills.

In an increasingly urbanized and interconnected world, the convergence of disciplines—urban planning, public policy, public health, health administration and informatics—creates the opportunity to understand the importance of these disciplines in livability and health and well-being. Students come to the Bloustein School to be part of the solution to create a better tomorrow.
