The mission of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program in the School of Public Service at Old Dominion University is to develop professionals with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to lead and advance public service in a diverse, multi-sector environment. We expect our graduates to be capable of critical problem solving, effective communication, skillful implementation of policy and programs, and ethical application of management and leadership concepts. The MPA program serves the region, state, and nation; supports public administration and public service; advances knowledge through applied and scholarly research.

The Master of Public Administration at Old Dominion University prepares students for careers as professionals in public service. The MPA at ODU provides students who have considerable experience in the public sector an opportunity to enhance their professional knowledge, skills, and abilities, enabling them to advance their careers.

The MPA at ODU offers rolling admission. You can start in the Fall, Spring, or Summer semester. The GRE is not required for admittance. However, admission to the MPA program is competitive and is granted only to those who show ability for success in graduate study. The program is 39 credit hours. A vital attribute of the program is its flexibility. Students can take courses in an online learning environment and access course materials online from any location. Many classes do not have a scheduled meeting time so that you can fit classes into your schedule.

Our graduates hold positions as city managers, program planners, policy analysts, and managers in federal, state, and local agencies, as well as non-profit agencies. Students are taught in a supportive, cooperative environment by experienced, skilled, knowledgeable staff passionate about student success. Students can specialize in Non-Profit Management and Governance, and Multi-Sector Public Service while earning Graduate Certificates in Public Procurement and Contract Management, Women's Studies, Social Justice & Entrepreneurship, or Business Analytics and Big Data.
