Is Instagram Down? Users Report Issues With Logging In and Accessing Stories

Instagram users reported issues with the social media platform on Monday, ranging from being unable to open the mobile application to stories not being available.

On Monday afternoon, Down Detector, a website that tracks service outages had more than 1,300 reports from users experiencing problems. People commented on the website that they couldn't open the application and activity feeds didn't show followers. Others complained that they were unable to login and received the message that there was no account linked to their credentials.

Several users criticized the social media application on Twitter for having frequent problems. Others posted gifs to express their emotions at the inability to use the social media application properly.

As of the publication of this article, Instagram hadn't publicly commented on the problems users were experiencing. Down Detector's live outage map put the problems predominately in the northeast area of the United States, as well as, in southern California.

Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion in cash and stock. Since that moment, Instagram grew from 30 million users to more than one billion active users.

"The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love. You'll still have all the same people you follow and that follow you," Kevin Systrom, Instagram's co-founder said in a statement at the time of Facebook's acquisition. "You'll still be able to share to other social networks. And you'll still have all the other features that make the app so fun and unique."

However, CNBC reported on Monday that a Bank of America analysis found mobile application downloads of both Facebook and Instagram declined.

The analysis found Instagram downloads decreased nine percent year over year and were tracking down more in the third quarter compared with the third quarter of 2018.

This decrease in downloads was not a social media trend across the board and CNBC reported Twitter, SnapChat and Pinterest had increased downloads for the third quarter of 2019.

The social media website first launched in 2010 and was named the App Store iPhone App of the Year in 2011. Over the years, it added new features, made the platform available for different phones and modified the user experience.

Systrom, as well as co-founder Mike Krieger, stepped down from their positions in October 2018 and Adam Mosseri filled the role of CEO. Before becoming CEO, Mosseri served as Vice President of Product for Instagram and previously worked at Facebook.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
