WiFi, Internet Outages in Chicago, Minnesota: Spectrum, Xfinity, Mediacom Services Are Down, Not Working

Authorities in Chicago, Minneapolis and most of the Midwest have advised residents to stay inside this week as that part of the country braces for record-breaking low temperatures and wind chills. Unfortunately for thousands of internet users who heeded their advice with plans to watch Netflix, waste time on Instagram or just work from home, they are unable to do so.

Users from across the country are reporting that Wi-Fi and Internet services are down throughout the region, with most of the reports coming from Spectrum and Mediacom users. According to outages tracking website Down Detector, Mediacom users started reporting outages around 1:30 a.m. EST while Spectrum was down and not working for users starting around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.

"Spectrum not working at address in Howard (Green Bay), WI. We need this for work notices and more. Have to chew phone data to get any on-line info. What's up?" user Lori asked.

"Well doesn't it figure. Spectrum doesn't work again," Down Detector user Jody L Clark Hamelynck said. "Tried calling customer service. That was a joke. All they worry about is making sure the bill get's paid."

Mediacom's support Twitter account was not putting out any general outages statements but replying to individual users about complaints. Most customers were receiving an "I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Please send us a DM with your account number or phone number, and we will investigate this further," message.

Similar messages were sent from the Ask Spectrum Twitter account. The Spectrum outage map on Down Detector shows most of the reports are from the upper Midwest and New York.

One of Newsweek's reporters in Chicago is also reporting that her Wi-Fi and Internet are down.

Many Xfinity customers in Chicago were similarly reporting Wednesday they were experiencing internet and Wi-Fi outages.

"It's funny that @Xfinity made such a big deal about offering free wifi to everyone in Chicago with the cold weather, but now that's not possible (at least in this area) since there's a big service outage," Twitter users E Hammer wrote.

"Oh great. The cable and internet are out. I'm sure @Xfinity has no idea when it will be back," customer Brian Vaxter tweeted."

"It's -15 degrees in Chicago and the wifi is out! This is how it ends," Cameron Shenassa tweeted.

This is a developing story. Stay with Newsweek for updates on the internet and Wi-Fi outages in the Midwest.
