Ivanka Trump Says President 'Energized' After Impeachment, Sidesteps Question If Giuliani Is Providing Good Counsel
Senior adviser to the president Ivanka Trump discussed her father's feelings in the wake of last week's House vote to impeach him, saying he is "energized" and is so tied up in his 2020 campaign he "didn't even feel like he was being impeached."
The president's daughter appeared in a previewed interview on CBS News' Face the Nation and lamented the "unprecedented resistance" she says President Donald Trump has faced since taking office. Brennan pressed Trump on how much she personally advises the president and also sidestepped a question about whether or not attorney Rudy Giuliani is providing the president "good counsel" given his repeated visits to Ukraine in order to potentially open up an investigation into the Biden family.
"[Donald Trump] is energized, as are 63 million-plus voters who elected him to office, this is historic as you note in many ways including the fact that it's the first purely partisan impeachment, in fact the only thing bipartisan was the vote against proceeding forward," Ivanka said, noting two Democrats who voted against the two articles of impeachment last week and one, Hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who simply voted "present."
"There is tremendous energy on his side...support for impeachment has actually decreased, not increased. I think he sees it for what it is, which I think is just raw, partisan politics."
Trump said she does not personally advise the president but she gives her "perspective and opinion" to her father in addition to the legal advise he receives from his attorneys. Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan then pressed Trump to reflect on her opinions of Giuliani, which she deflected by simply complimenting the former Republican New York City mayor.
"In your opinion do you think he's getting good counsel from Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal attorney?" Brennan asked Trump in the upcoming interview to air December 29. "I ask because his actions in Ukraine and the investigation and his claim that he's still working on behalf of your father on these projects. It has created a lot of news ... that has complicated moving on."
"I know Rudy Giuliani in a very different context, as one of the greatest mayors in the history of this country and a real hero in New York. So that is the experience I have had with Rudy for a very long period of time. He is smart and thoughtful and a real warrior," Trump said.
"More than 50 percent of America believes we shouldn't be in this position and that the president shouldn't have been impeached," she added.
