Ivanka Trump Reminded of Donald's Child Separation Policy After She Tweets About Working to End Human Trafficking

Senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump's tweet touting the Trump administration's new efforts to end human trafficking backfired on Friday as many Twitter users brought up her father President Donald Trump's policy that led to migrant family separations at the border.

Ivanka Trump tweeted a video of herself speaking in a room full of officials and leaders about a new public-private partnership "to end human trafficking, the first of its kind." The partnership will provide recommendations to the administration's Interagency Task Force and "the use of the most proven methods in the private sector and civil society to combat this evil scourge," she said at the meeting on Tuesday.

"This week @POTUS's Interagency Task Force to combat #humantrafficking met and announced investments totaling $75M in the Program to End Modern Slavery, making it @statedept's largest anti-trafficking program," Ivanka Trump tweeted. "We are committed to ending human trafficking, in all its evil forms."

Justin Hendrix, executive director of the NYC Media Lab, replied, "You ARE human traffickers," referring to a Trump administration policy that dictated that adults caught crossing the border illegally would be detained and face criminal prosecution, while their children would be taken into government custody or put in foster care.

"You have separated thousands of families, hundreds and hundreds of babies and children from their parents," Hendrix tweeted.

Facing widespread criticism, the president signed an executive order last summer to halt the family separations.

Journalist Helen Kennedy also likened the family separations to human trafficking.

"Your administration is snatching kids from their parents, sometimes children so young they don't know their names yet, and adopting them out," Kennedy tweeted. "Sounds like trafficking to me."

Writer Nestor Gomez accused Ivanka Trump of being "tone deaf" and suggested she has turned a blind eye to family separations.

"'We are committed to ending human trafficking' TONE DEAF comment by @IvankaTrump," Gomez tweeted, "When @realDonaldTrump took #immigrantchildren away from their parents and put them in cages!"

A Twitter user expressed skepticism over how genuine the bill was.

"It's probably just an immigration bill in hiding. Dual purpose kind of thing. Sorry, Totally No Credibility Barbie!" the Twitter use wrote. "Not buying it!"

But Ivanka Trump also had some supporters.

"Keep up the good work Ivanka!! You are doing a fabulous job so thankful that you are part of the Trump administration!!" a Twitter user replied, along with a heart emoji.

Ivanka Trump was initially silent about the administration's family separation policy. About a month after her father halted the policy, she admitted, "that was a low point for me."

"I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children," she said in August 2018.
