Jack Black 'School of Rock' Speech About Body Positivity Goes Viral Again

Jack Black fans took to Twitter to share their admiration and love for the actor after a heartwarming clip from the movie School of Rock went viral nearly 20 years after the film's release.

This scene is more revolutionary than I think they even knew and it really stuck with me as a child. Especially the last line. pic.twitter.com/KkhvGicjVZ

Twitter user Hamish Steele, or @hamishsteele on the platform, posted a clip on Sunday from the hit 2003 movie about a guitarist down on his luck who pretends to be a music teacher at a private school and forms a rock band. The clip begins just as Maryam Hassan's character Tamika expresses her fears associated with being a lead singer due to her weight.

"Hey, you've got something everybody wants. You've got talent, girl," Black's character Dewey Finn starts. "You've heard of Aretha Franklin, right? Okay, she's a big lady. But when she starts singing, she blows people's minds. Everyone wants to party with Aretha!"

He comforts her further by reminding her she is not alone in struggling with her body image. "And you know else has a weight issue ... me," he says. "But, once I get up on stage, start doing my thing, people worship me! Because I'm sexy and chubby, man!

The clip ends with his witty response to the girl's question about why he doesn't diet: "Because I like to eat, is that such a crime?"

The clip was captioned, "This scene is more revolutionary than I think they even knew and it really stuck with me as a child. Especially the last line."

Many of the 5.5 million viewers agreed, sharing their own struggles with weight and self-love. Writer Jennifer C. Martin remarked, "It was so f*****g hard to be a teen girl in the 2000s because it was very much about being thin, skinny, etc —there was not even the perfunctory (and still annoying) "sexy thicc" talk yet. And this movie and scene were amazing."

Another anonymous user appreciated the language Black used when talking about weight. "I also love that he didn't deny her and say '[you're] not fat,' calling her skinny wouldn't have had as much of an impact on me as him giving her confidence did," user @beeviivii wrote.

Adding to the Jack Black love. I was VERY concerned when I heard a man was going to play a teenage girl, but his portrayal of Bethany in Jumanji was comedic without being degrading. It's a fine line and he walked it because he radiates love and compassion. pic.twitter.com/qC3J3h5sm6

Others were inspired to share their own favorite Jack Black on-screen memories. Shannon Hale chimed in with her thoughts on his appearance in the 2017 Jumanji reboot, where he plays the video game character that a teen girl turns into.

"I was VERY concerned when I heard a man was going to play a teenage girl, but his portrayal of Bethany in Jumanji was comedic without being degrading," she wrote. "It's a fine line and he walked it because he radiates love and compassion."

Another anonymous user @mikeydadamson joked that they were most fond of his Tonight Show appearance with Jimmy Fallon in 2018, where he played the Sax-A-Boom alongside The Roots. "Jack Black is what you get when you dump all your skill points into Charisma," they joked.

Steele reflected that they were thrilled that everyone was sharing the love for Jack Black in light of their original post. "This post was inspired by a bunch of nasty fatphobic comments," they tweeted. "And whenever I see fatphobia I think of this scene and it makes me feel better. If you like Jack Black, shut the f**k up about people's weight. It's that simple."

The actor also made headlines back in November after fans expressed their love for his dance to Cardi B's "WAP" song that went viral on TikTok.

"Jack Black" wasn't the only term Twitter users didn't expect to see trending on their feeds today. Earlier this morning, a seemingly impossible algebra equation started hundreds of terse discourses over the correct way to solve the problem.
