We're now a few weeks removed from the conclusion of the 2026 Winter Olympics, which ended with a historic moment for the United States when the men’s hockey team defeated Canada in the gold medal game on the final day.
Team USA won 2–1 in overtime off a goal from Jack Hughes, who has since become a legend in the sports world as he returned to the NHL competing for the New Jersey Devils.
After the U.S. women’s team also defeated Canada in the gold medal game, now Team USA baseball in the World Baseball Classic is set to face the Canadians on Friday night in the quarterfinals.

Ahead of the matchup — which features some of MLB’s best players — manager Mark DeRosa revealed that the team received a personal message from Hughes to fire them up, and hockey jerseys are expected to arrive for the team to warm up in before the game.
Actually, Jack Hughes sent the boys a nice little fire-up message that I put in their group chat,” DeRosa said. “I know there’s also talk of some hockey jerseys being sent in for the guys to wear during BP or around the clubhouse. So yeah, we’re firmly aware of the gold medal run there.”

"I'm trying to imagine being an American baseball player hearing this before a game against a MONSTER underdog in Canada. This ain't hockey, Jack," a fan said.
Someone else added, "Team Canada has a chance to do the funniest thing ever."
Another person wrote, "Atta way, Jack!"
"Jack Hughes is a man of the people," a fan shared.
One more person commented, "Just when I thought I couldn’t want them to lose any more than I already do."

Unlike the men’s gold medal game, Canada is actually the heavy underdog on Friday night against the U.S.
However, Team USA did just lose a game to Italy, and Canada does boast some MLB talent across their roster, which could make for an interesting game when first pitch occurs at 8 p.m. EST on Friday night.
