James Comey Book Backlash: Amid Trump's Fury, RNC Pays for Website Attacking 'A Higher Truth'

While Trump's opponents squeal with delight at some of the more scandalous revelations in former FBI director James Comey's new book, the president's allies have joined what appears to be a smear campaign against the tome.

The official Twitter account for the Republican National Committee tweeted on Thursday night a mock cover of the former FBI director's much-anticipated memoir, A Higher Loyalty. It accuses Comey of egotism and features blurbs from some of his detractors.

"...practically wrecked our political system with [his] self obsessed handling of the Clinton case," one of the blurbs reads. "...self-serving, narcissistic," reads another.

The tweet also links back to LyinComey.com, a website paid for by the Republican National Committee. The landing page for the site floats the idea that Comey is an obstructionist, a liar and a leaker.

"James Comey wants to portray himself as a non-partisan, by-the-book Boy Scout rather than a politically motivated Washington insider," the website reads. A mashup of recycled footage featuring prominent Democrats criticizing Comey also appeared on the site as of Friday morning. Senators Bernie Sanders and Chuck Schumer, as well as Representative Nancy Pelosi appear on the supercut.

It also features a link to the personal Twitter account of President Donald Trump, who, in a string of seemingly irate Friday morning tweets, blasted Comey and branded him a "LEAKER & LIAR" and an "untruthful slime ball."

James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the terrible job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. He leaked CLASSIFIED information, for which he should be prosecuted. He lied to Congress under OATH. He is a weak and.....

....untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI. His handling of the Crooked Hillary Clinton case, and the events surrounding it, will go down as one of the worst “botch jobs” of history. It was my great honor to fire James Comey!

Leaked excerpts of Comey's book, scheduled to be released on April 17, paints a devastating picture of Trump's administration and of Trump himself. Comey likens the blustery business mogul to a mafia king in one excerpt.

"The boss in complete control. The loyalty oaths," Comey writes. "The us-versus-them worldview. The lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organization above morality and above the truth."

In another passage, Comey sounds off on what he describes as Trump's obsession with the "pee tape" allegations—a widely-circulated but so far unfounded rumor claiming Trump paid Russian prostitutes to urinate on a bed. According to Comey, the president was worried first lady Melania Trump would believe the torrid allegation, which stems from the highly-controversial Steele Dossier.

"He brought up what he called the 'golden showers thing' . . . adding that it bothered him if there was 'even a 1 percent chance' his wife, Melania, thought it was true," Comey writes in the book. "He just rolled on, unprompted, explaining why it couldn't possibly be true, ending by saying he was thinking of asking me to investigate the allegation to prove it was a lie. I said it was up to him."

"In what kind of marriage, to what kind of man, does a spouse conclude there is only a 99 percent chance her husband didn't do that?" Comey writes.

Trump has steadfastly denied the existence of the tape. Comey, who has long shared a rancorous relationship with the president, was fired on May 9.

"While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau," Trump wrote at the time.
