Nearly four in 10 people do not believe Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance, is ready for the presidency if necessary, according to a new survey.
The Yahoo News/YouGov survey of 1,743 U.S. adults found that 38 percent of respondents do not believe the Ohio senator is currently ready to become the president if required to do so, compared to 29 percent who say he is.
The poll also found that one-third (33 percent) were not sure if Vance was ready for the presidency or not. This is a possible sign that the Hillbilly Elegy author, who has been a senator for less than two years, still needs to raise his national political profile since being named as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Questions of the suitability of Trump's running mate have become more significant in recent weeks in the wake of the assassination attempt of the former president and suggestions that the 78-year-old Trump is too old to run for another term in office.
It has already been suggested that Trump may have made a mistake in picking Vance as his 2024 running mate.
Vance's inclusion on the GOP 2024 ticket is not likely to broaden its appeal to voters, seeing as his MAGA political views are almost identical to Trump's. Vance is also a senator in a state that Trump is expected to win in November regardless.

When asked if they believe Trump made the correct decision in picking Vance as his running mate, 30 percent of adults surveyed said it was the right decision, with 25 percent saying it was the wrong choice.
Nearly half (45 percent) say they are not sure whether Vance being the next potential GOP vice president was the right one or not.
Newsweek reached out to Vance's office via email for comment.
Trump and Vance are now likely to face Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election after Biden ended his campaign on Sunday, although Harris has not yet announced her running mate.
The Yahoo News/YouGov poll showed California Governor Gavin Newsom (30 percent) is the most popular choice among Democrats and independents who lean Democratic for Harris' 2024 running mate.
However, it is unlikely that Harris, a former California senator and attorney general, would choose another California Democrat to join her on the 2024 ticket.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (25 percent), Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (24 percent), Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (24 percent) and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly (18 percent) are the following most popular choices for the potential Democratic vice president role, according to the poll.
The Yahoo News/YouGov survey sampled 1,743 U.S. adults between July 19 – July 22. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
