'Jeopardy!' Champ Matt Amodio Praises Mayim Bialik for Being a 'Fun' Host

Jeopardy! champion Matt Amodio has praised host Mayim Bialik for bringing an element of "fun" to the quiz show while also "taking the job seriously."

Bialik became an unexpected addition to the show's primetime line-up when she stepped in to replace scandal-hit Mike Richards. And in an interview with Newsweek, Amodio had nothing but praise for The Big Bang Theory actress, who also has a doctorate in neuroscience.

"Mayim is a fun person who's taking the job seriously, which are the two main things necessary in the role," Amodio said via email. "She treats the contestants warmly, making them feel as comfortable as possible in a stressful time."

After a months-long search—in which a number of celebrity guest hosts auditioned to succeed Alex Trebek, who died last November—the show's executive producer Richards was named as the permanent presenter on August 11.

He stepped down from the coveted post just nine days later, however, after The Ringer published a report about offensive comments he had made while hosting a podcast in 2013 and 2014.

The backlash also led to Richards losing his job as the executive producer of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

Richards' sole week as permanent host aired at the start of Season 38 in September. Bialik, who also stars in the sitcom Call Me Kat, will now split hosting duties with all-time Jeopardy! champ Ken Jennings until the end of this year.

However, Amodio doesn't believe the upheaval has overshadowed his phenomenal winning streak of 33 consecutive games. He is now in second place for most shows won, behind Jennings' record of 74.

"If anything, I think more people are talking about Jeopardy! now than they otherwise would be," Amodio told Newsweek.

"The fact that the hosting decision is garnering so much attention is not surprising to me," the Ohio native added. "It's a testament to the role Jeopardy! and Alex Trebek play in our cultural identity. Alex is a beloved icon, and it's never easy to move on after we lose a beloved icon."

After Richards' old statements came back to haunt him, does Amodio ever think twice before he tweets? Only when it comes to keeping the results from his Jeopardy! pre-recorded episodes under wraps, he said.

"I'm not particularly cautious about what I say concerning anything about my Jeopardy! experience—except spoilers!

"I truthfully loved everything about my experience, and I was never treated with anything other than kindness by anybody I met. I only have good things to say!"
