Who was Jessica Starr? Anchors Cry on Air While Announcing Detroit Meteorologist's Death

Fox2 Detroit meteorologist Jessica Starr died on Wednesday. The Michigan affiliate of the Fox News network announced Starr's death on air on Thursday morning. The 35-year-old died from an apparent suicide.

"Last night we were informed of the heartbreaking news that our friend and colleague, meteorologist Jessica Starr took her life," the network said in a statement issued on its website. "All of us here at FOX 2 are in deep shock and cannot believe that such a wonderful, bright and intelligent individual will no longer be with us. Her family and friends will be in our thoughts and prayers in the coming days as we all deal with our grief."

Starr landed a position on Fox 2's meteorology team in 2012, four years after reporting the weather and community events for the Fox affiliate in Baltimore, Maryland. The Michigan native started her career as a weekend meteorologist in Lansing, Michigan. She received two meteorology degrees from Michigan State University and Mississippi State University.

Several of Starr's colleagues mourned her death on-air during the morning news on Thursday. "It's tough to be here today but as a family and thinking of her family, we're all working to get through this together," news anchor Amy Andrews said. "Just keep Jessica's family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this time."

Starr had been off the air for some time while she was recovering from Lasik eye surgery undergone in October. Her last tweet was an update on her recovery in November. "Update; yesterday was a struggle for me," she wrote on November 14.

"I really wanted to come back but I need more time to recover. Please keep me in your thoughts during this challenging time. Will keep you updated," she continued.

Starr is survived by her husband and two children.
