James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, who served as president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, has cancer, he said in a statement Wednesday.

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," the 90-year-old Democrat and activist said. "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week."

Emory Healthcare is the largest system of hospitals in the state of Georgia.

In May, Carter cut short a trip to Guyana on behalf of his charitable NGO, the Carter Center, for health reasons.
