Biden Campaign Fires Back at Trump Calling on Him To Testify: 'Not Even Richard Nixon Stooped to Undermining National Security'

Following President Donald Trump's calls for Joe Biden to testify in the upcoming Senate impeachment trial the Biden campaign has fired back, stating that Trump committed offenses that "no American President—not even Richard Nixon—stooped to: undermining our national security."

Campaign spokesman Andrew Bates wrote in a statement to The Washington Post that Trump "was caught red-handed committing an unprecedented offense. Bates said that Trump endangered national security "by trying to force a foreign country to lie about the political opponent he fears the most."

"The Democrats will do anything to avoid a trial in the Senate in order to protect Sleepy Joe Biden, and expose the millions and millions of dollars that 'Where's' Hunter, & possibly Joe, were paid by companies and countries for doing nothing," the president tweeted early Tuesday morning. "Joe wants no part of this mess."

On December 5, Trump tweeted his wish to have both Biden and his son Hunter testify in a Senate trial. "We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is," he wrote. Trump was impeached 12 days later by the House of Representatives on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after a congressional inquiry found evidence that he used the power of his office to exert pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Multiple witnesses testified that the president withheld military aid to Ukraine as leverage to convince Zelenskiy to launch a public investigation into Biden and his son ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

On Saturday, Biden said he would obey a subpoena, if he were ordered to testify, but also said there was not a "legal basis" for him to be subpoenaed, according to The New York Times.

Trump's behavior was to be expected, in Bates's opinion. "It makes sense that Donald Trump is going into 2020 bawling like he's about to get fired," he wrote. The spokesman also wrote that Trump was "literally the most corrupt president in the history of our country."

Bates further offered the president advice. "[A]s the Vice President has said, he should finally stop breaking his promise to release his tax returns or shut up," he wrote, echoing a point Biden made in October. "Mr. President, even Richard Nixon released his tax returns," the former vice president said at an Ohio campaign stop.

Spokespeople for the Trump and Biden campaigns and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
