Joe Biden Sign Torched in Tennessee, 50 Others Stolen or Vandalized

A Tennessee couple had their sign showing support for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris burnt in an area which has already seen dozens of similar placards stolen and vandalized.

Ryan and Laurel Daugherty had their sign backing the Democratic presidential ticket torched in the early hours of Thursday, October 15.

Another smaller sign showing support for Democrat James Campbell for the House of Representatives in Tennessee's District 64, was also damaged, The Columbia Daily Herald reported.

After discovering the fire on the front lawn, the couple installed surveillance cameras at their home. A day later, the cameras recorded several people on their property attempting to destroy what was left of the scorched sign, although it could not capture the license plate of the vehicle they were driving.

"It is fearmongering," Ryan Daugherty said. "It has definitely made our immediate neighbors feel a little bit wary.

"We lived in downtown Murfreesboro and nothing like this [has] happened. I'd say it is more about the community that you have."

The pair filed a report for vandalism and arson with the Maury County Sheriff's Department.

The attack was condemned by the Maury County Republican Party.

"I think the lack of civility and political discourse has become cancerous to our society," said Jason Whatley, president of the Maury County Republican Party.

"There is no tolerance on either side of the aisle. You disagree, we stand together as a society. How low does your intellect have to be that the only way that you compete in the marketplace of ideas is to steal someone's campaign sign?"

Kendall Azzariti, the chair of the Maury County Democratic Party, reported that at least 50 signs showing support for Biden and Harris have been stolen or damaged in the run up to November's election.

Last week, the Maury County Democratic Party, posted a photograph on Facebook of a new sign reading "you stole our sign...but not our votes. Biden-Harris 2020."

Also speaking to The Daily Herald, Azzariti said: "It is incredibly disconcerting and very, very small of them.

"I expected something to happen to some of them," Azzzariti said. "I did not expect to be so much of it. That is not going to stop us from voting, and we are going to stand up on this."

Ken McArther, the treasurer of the Maury County Republican Party, said that about 15 signs which are showing support for President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have also recently been stolen or vandalized in the area.

The Maury County Sheriff's Department has been contacted for comment.
