U.S.-China Live Updates: Biden and Xi to Hold Virtual Meeting but White House Sets Low Expectations

Live Updates

Low expectations have been set by the White House for a virtual meeting between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping amid heightened tensions over Taiwan and the fallout from the COVID pandemic. It is the first one-on-one meeting since Biden became president.

The pair will look to discuss how to handle competition between the U.S. and China, according to officials, but no major announcements are expected to come from the talks. Unusually, there will not be a joint statement by the two leaders, in a sign of strained relations between the countries.

Xi on Thursday cautioned against a return to Cold War-era confrontation between the East and West. Analysts believe, however, that the countries could build on positive talks between negotiators at the recent COP26 climate change conference and the G20 summit.
