The Cincinnati Bengals drew scrutiny from the media (and from the NFL) after Joe Burrow suffered an injury during the team's 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Friday.

Burrow was spotted before the game wearing a wrap on his wrist, but he was not listed on the injury report. After taking a hit in the second quarter, the quarterback told reporters on Friday that he felt a "pop" as he threw for a touchdown.

On Friday afternoon, the Bengals announced Burrow is done for the season with a torn wrist ligament.

"Tried to give it a go but just couldn't get it done," Burrow told reporters. "Obviously got the news today. So not great."

Burrow said the Bengals believe the injury happened on the play before the touchdown throw when the 26-year-old landed on his arm.

"I didn't even realize I fell on it before they showed me the video," Burrow said. "In the heat of it like that, sometimes you don't even really feel what's happening to your body in those situations just because of the adrenaline, so it's hard to even describe it."

When asked about the sleeve on his arm, Burrow said it was a "completely different thing."

"It's not uncommon for guys to wear compression sleeves on a plane because when you go up to the altitude, things can swell up," Burrow said. "Football, you have a lot of bumps and bruises. This is a completely new injury."

Burrow was then asked if he had any discomfort or soreness before the flight that prompted the compression sleeve.

"You try to maintain your body as much as you can," Burrow said. "On a short week, you have some bumps and bruises. Had nothing to do with the wrist."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported early Friday morning that the league would look into the issue, noting that Burrow looked limited by his wrist before the injury ostensibly occurred. Injury reports are a big deal for a league with three official gambling partnerships.

"The NFL routinely looks into matters of compliance with the Injury Report policy, and will do so in this instance as well," Schefter wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Teams can be fined or even potentially lose a draft pick."

Burrow, meanwhile, didn't know how long he would be out at this stage. He added that he is evaluating his recovery options, but that everything he has seen so far suggests surgery will be necessary.

"I haven't had the conversations yet," Burrow said. "I just had the MRI this morning, and then we watched the tape, and then we had a team meeting. So I haven't really had time to have those discussions with the people that I'm going to making the decision with, so I don't really have an answer. But likely surgery."
