What Was Joe Jackson's Cause of Death? Patriarch Dies at 89

Joe Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson family, died on Wednesday, according to a report from TMZ. The legendary music manager, who formed the iconic '60s boy band The Jackson 5, was 89 years old.

Jackson was in the final stages of terminal cancer and had been hospitalized in early June.

The Arkansas native spent his last days surrounded by family members, including his wife, Katherine Jackson, and some of his children and grandchildren.

Jackson was the father of 12 children—the latter two were from a 25-year affair with Cheryl Terrell. The family's biggest star, pop legend Michael Jackson, died in 2009.

Joe Jackson's later years were muddled by health problems. The Jackson family patriarch spent time in the hospital in 2016 after battling a high fever, TMZ reported. He had also had a stroke and three heart attacks in 2015, leading doctors to insert a pacemaker.

Although Joe Jackson was considered one of the music industry's most successful parent managers—he guided The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson's solo career as well as the solo career of Janet Jackson—he had a menacing reputation that came with accusations of child abuse and mismanagement.

One year after Michael Jackson's death, Joe Jackson admitted to beating his children when they were young but said he didn't regret hitting them. "It kept them out of jail and kept them right," he told Oprah Winfrey during an interview in 2010.

Following his death on Wednesday, hundreds of people took to Twitter to offer condolences to the Jacksons, while others lambasted Joe Jackson for the years of abuse he'd administered to his children. His grandson Taj Jackson, who is one of Tito Jackson's three sons, defended him on social media, saying Joe Jackson was "loved by our ENTIRE family."

Disgusted by some of the comments I’m reading about my grandpa Joe by those who didn’t even know him. Please don't just regurgitate what you were spoon fed by the press. Joe was loved by our ENTIRE family and our hearts are in pain. Let us grieve without the nastiness.#ripthehawk
