John Bolton: 'Munchkin' Who Leaked Trump-Putin Call Info 'Should Be Ashamed of Themselves'

Hours after being named by President Donald Trump as his pick to replace H.R. McMaster as national security adviser, John Bolton excoriated the unknown individuals who leaked details of Trump's briefing prior to speaking to Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week.

Citing officials familiar with the call, The Washington Post reported that Trump had been warned by his national security advisers not to congratulate Putin on his re-election and to condemn the poisoning of a Russian spy on British soil, which both the British and U.S. governments blame on Moscow.

But Bolton was more focused on the leaker rather than what was leaked during an appearance on Fox News Thursday evening.

"When I read about the leak of the note and the subject, I was outraged by it," Bolton said. "You cannot conduct diplomacy, you cannot expect other foreign leaders to be candid and open in their conversations with the president, if some munchkin in the executive branch decides they're going to leak the talking points, or the transcript, or any other aspect of it."

He continued: "And I think this is really a terrible reflection on the individual or individuals who did this. They should be ashamed of themselves. And I think whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, a liberal or a conservative, there ought to be unity on this point that leaking of that sort is simply unacceptable."

In an interview earlier in the day, Bolton said he would oversee attempts to stem the flow of leakers from the Trump White House. He added that the leaker or leakers had "put in jeopardy the other 300-plus-million American citizens just because they think their morality is better than everybody else's."

Bolton's appointment has already proved controversial, given that he has previously advocated for a preemptive strike on North Korea and for bombing Iran.
