Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw, the Manchester United defenders, are reported to be "baffled" by the criticism they have received from Jose Mourinho in the aftermath of the club's 3-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday.

Mourinho was forced to play with a makeshift back four, including winger Ashley Young at right back, with both Smalling and Shaw out with injury.

The Portuguese pointedly referred to a "difference between the ones with pain and those for whom pain can make a little difference" after the game at Liberty Stadium. Phil Jones, making his first start in ten months, was forced to play as a central defender.

But The Times claims Shaw and Smalling have been left "confused" by the criticism, with the former reportedly struggling with pain in the same leg he broke last Autumn against PSV Eindhoven.

Smalling, meanwhile, has been playing with pain-killing injections for a foot injury.
