Jose Mourinho had a quiet transfer deadline day, with most of the Manchester United manager's business conducted earlier in the summer.

The Portuguese boss did make one significant move, however, in blocking the transfer of Morgan Schneiderlin to Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs had been keen on the France international midfielder, according to the Daily Mail.

But Mourinho told Schneiderlin, who signed from Southampton last summer, that he was still very much a part of his long-term plans at Old Trafford.

Schneiderlin has yet to start a game for United this season, and might have feared his position at the club was under threat when Mourinho signed Paul Pogba for a world-record £89 million ($117 million) at the start of August.

But with United in four competitions this season, including a potentially gruelling UEFA Europa League campaign, the 26-year-old will almost certainly be needed as cover at some point.

Tottenham was then forced into a late-night pursuit of the Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who signed for £30 million ($39.4 million) just before the 11pm deadline.
