Former Texas Rangers Star Josh Hamilton Indicted by Grand Jury on Charge of Beating Teenage Daughter

Former American League MVP Josh Hamilton has been indicted by a grand jury in Texas on a third degree felony charge of injury to a child.

The former Texas Rangers star turned himself in to authorities on October 30 and pleaded not guilty a day later after his 14-year-old daughter accused him of beating her. He was indicted by a Tarrant County grand jury on Monday.

The 38-year-old was released on a $35,000 bond and faces between two and 10 years in prison, should he be convicted. The trial has been delayed as court hearings in Texas are suspended until May 11 at the earliest, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to an affidavit by a Keller Police Department detective, Hamilton's daughter reported the incident happened on September 30 when he was enraged by a comment she made.

The five-time MLB All-Star selection reportedly began cursing and shouting at his daughter, before launching at full water bottle at her, which hit the girl in the chest. The girl said Hamilton smashed the seat she was resting her feet on, before lifting her off the chair she was sat on. When she fell to the floor, Hamilton picked her up and carried her to her bedroom.

Despite her apologies, Hamilton allegedly began hitting his daughter's legs with an open hand and closed fist while pressing her face onto the mattress. According to the affidavit, Hamilton then dared his daughter to report him.

"I hope you go in front of the f***ing judge and tell him what a terrible dad I am so I don't have to see you anymore and you don't have to come to my house again," he reportedly told her according to NBC Dallas Forth Worth.

According to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, the alleged incident occurred at Hamilton's home in Keller, Texas, just two days after he was introduced as one of the greatest Rangers of the Globe Life Park Era when the Rangers played their last ever game at the ballpark.

The teenager told her mother—Hamilton's ex-wife—about the incident, who has since filed for a temporary restraining order on her daughter's behalf. The teenager is the eldest of Hamilton's three daughters.

Hamilton's ex-wife and the former Texas Rangers player shared custody of their three daughters at the time of the incident, but the court subsequently banned him from having contact with them after he turned in to the authorities.

At the end of last year the order was changed to allow Hamilton to meet them but only in presence of an adult as supervisor.

A complicated personal life repeatedly made headlines during Hamilton's career, as the outfielder, a recovering drug addict and alcoholic, suffered numerous relapses.
