Jussie Smollett 'People of Interest' Photos Released by Chicago Police

Empire actor Jussie Smollet's potential attackers were captured in surveillance video footage released by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) on Wednesday. The assault is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Officials said they tracked down photos of the apparent assailants and said they might release the images that day. They showed two men walking down a street between 1:30 a.m. and 1:45 a.m. early Tuesday.

"Photos of people of interest who were in [the] area of the alleged assault & battery of Empire cast member," Anthony Guglielmi‏, the CPD's chief communications officer, tweeted Wednesday. "While [the] video does not capture an encounter, detectives are taking this development seriously & wish to question individuals as more cameras are being reviewed."

Smollett, 36, said he was attacked by two men. They allegedly yelled racial and homophobic slurs. One man wrapped the actor's head in a noose. Both fled the premises after the attack.

Smollett was transported to Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He is said to be in good condition.

Smollett plays Jamal Lyon on Empire, a musical drama on Fox. Jamal is the gay son to Terrence Howard's character Lucious Lyon and Taraji P. Henson's character Cookie Lyon.

After Smollett's attack, 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment released a statement.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our Empire family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a statement from 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment read. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate—and especially against one of our own."

Fox announced its plans to postpone production on Empire, though it was because of the freezing weather in Chicago, not the attack.

"Widespread temperatures in the -15° to -30° range to start today, and yes that is actual temperatures. These will be slow to climb this morning. While far less wind than yesterday morning, still enough for added dangerous conditions," a statement via the National Weather Service's (NWS) website read Thursday.
