Amid Meghan and Harry Drama, Kate Middleton Celebrates 38th Birthday With Tribute from Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles have paid tribute to Kate Middleton on her 38th birthday following a turbulent 24 hours for the royal family.

The official royal family Twitter account tweeted three pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge with the queen while wishing her "very happy birthday" on Thursday.

The account also tweeted a link to the duchess' profile page on the royal website which details her work since she married Prince William in 2011.

A similar tribute was also paid by the Twitter account of Clarence House, the official residence of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla. The account tweeted photos of Kate with the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall while wishing her a happy 38th birthday.

Elsewhere, a new portrait of Kate sitting on a wooden fence, taken by photographer Matt Porteous, was also posted by the Kensington Royal Instagram account.

Porteous has previously taken photos of Middleton and Prince William along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

"Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages on The Duchess of Cambridge's birthday," the photo's caption read.

Sussex Royal, the account for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, also posted a "very happy birthday" message to the Duchess of Cambridge in the comment section of the new portrait of Kate.

The Duchess of Cambridge's 38th birthday arrived a day after the bombshell announcement that Harry and Meghan are stepping down from being "senior" members of the royal family while hoping to become financially independent of the monarchy.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who married in May 2018, said they will now split their time between the U.K. and North America in order to continue to "honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity," the pair added in a statement.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also unveiled a new website in which they detailed how they hope to earn a professional income after they give up the £2 million ($2.6 million) a year they earn from public funding.

The website states that 95 percent of Harry and Meghan's personal income currently comes from the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate that provides income to Prince Charles' family, which they will continue to receive.

The decision from Meghan and Harry to step down as "senior" royal family members was reportedly made without discussion beforehand with the queen.

"Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

"We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."
